New stage in Panama deepens study on population and housing.

Panama City, Mar 6 (Prensa Latina) The Office of the General Controller of the Republic began today, and for one month, the stage after the population and housing census in Panama, covered 90 percent of the studies up to the 4th of March.

According to the institution, the remaining 10 percent of the interviews that were not carried out at the time, will be covered during another month, so they will visit again those homes where there were no people at the moment when the census enumerator or supervisor arrived.

Controller Gerardo Solís pointed out that from this Monday and until April 4, the so-called post-census period will also allow to verify the information gathered.

So far, activists have visited 1.5 million homes and counted four million people, of whom 50.4 percent are women and 49.6 percent are men.

Preliminary datas highlights that 32.8 percent of those interviewed recognize themselves as Afro-descendant (1,258,915 Panamanians).

According to Solís, Panama would be the third country in Latin America where the population says it is Afro-descendant, behind Brazil (50 percent) and Cuba (35 percent) While 554,215 people (14.4 percent) qualified themselves as indigenous population.

The National Institute of Statistics and Census, a dependency of the Controller’s Office, expects to have preliminary census data by July 15, 2023 and the final information in October of this same year.
