Panama begins registration for an advance vote in general elections

Panama City, Mar 9 (Prensa Latina) With the 2024 general elections on view, Panama's Electoral Tribunal (TE) began registering citizens who could vote in advance.

According to a TE press release, voters’ registration, which includes citizens abroad, will be extended until December 15.

Judge Alfredo Juncá told reporters that this vote would only be for the position of President of the Republic.

The balloting period for those persons will be from April 23 to May 2, 2024.

According to the Electoral Code of Panama, citizens abroad on election day, members of the Public Force, the Fire Brigade, and the National Civil Protection System could cast their votes in advance.

Members of the Panamanian Red Cross, medical and nursing personnel, press professionals, electoral delegates, employees of the TE and the Electoral Attorney General’s Office, and persons who have proven to have some disability are also on the list.

The citizens who will vote abroad must not have acquired a nationality other than Panamanian by naturalization or are not entitled by birth.

On May 5, 2024, Panamanians will decide the new president and vice president of the country,and also 20 lawmakers to the Central American Parliament, 71 lawmakers to the National Assembly, 81 mayors, 701 local authorities, and 11 councillors, all with their respective substitutes, for a period ranging from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2029.
