Political trial against president of Ecuador enters new phase

Quito, Apr 17 (Prensa Latina) The impeachment process against the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, will enter a new phase with the appearance of witnesses.

Among those summoned to testify this week are Luis Verdesoto, former National Secretary for Anti-Corruption Public Policy, Carlos Riofrío, acting State General Comptroller , Hugo Aguiar, former manager of Petroecuador, and Andersson Boscán, a journalist for the La Posta digital media outlet.

The deadline for the delivery of evidence by the prosecution and the defense expired this Sunday as part of that judicial proceedings.

Last week, the assembly members Viviana Veloz and Mireya Pazmiño, on behalf of the applicants for the request to prosecute the president, brought to the legislative table 11 documents as proofs of alleged embezzlement in a contract between the companies Flota Petrolera Ecuatoriana (FLOPEC) and Amazonas Tanker.

Other evidences were the files issued by former anti-corruption secretary Luis Verdesoto on these alleged inconsistencies in the contract, as well as a letter from Vice Admiral Johnny Estupiñán.

On the other hand, the president’s lawyer, Edgar Neira, sent a letter to the Oversight Commission of the National Assembly requesting exculpatory evidence, including some 30 documents from the public entity FLOPEC, the Parliament, the Attorney General’s Office, the Comptroller’s Office, the Coordinating Company of Public Companies (EMCO) and the Prosecutor’s Office. This also includes 23 appearances by prosecutor Diana Salazar, comptroller Carlos Riofrío and the nine members of the Economic Regime Commission of the National Assembly.

On the other hand, the Legal Secretary of the Presidency of Ecuador, Juan Pablo Ortiz, presented new evidence as part of the possible political trial.
