FAO collaborates with Cuba on food safety issues

Havana, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) Authorities reported today that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is collaborating with Cuba on food safety issues.

Today’s report indicates that the National Office of Standardization (ONN) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment and FAO shared results of the work of the National Committee of CODEX Alimentarius in Cuba.

This alliance is given in the promotion of a culture of quality and food safety within the context of an international project financed by the CODEX Trust Fund, as stated by FAO.

According to the institutional text, last week, during a meeting, an update was given on the participation of the Cuban delegation in the 45th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which was held from the 21st to the 25th of November, 2022, in Rome.

The information, education and communication strategy on Codex and food safety on the island was shared.

Speaking at the meeting on behalf of FAO Representative in Cuba, Marcelo Resende, FAO consultant Maidelyn Diaz, praised the Cuban government for the drafting and approval of the Law on Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security.

She also congratulated the ONN for organizing and directing the operation of Codex in the country, and for preparing a CODEX Procedures Manual at a national level.

She said that the main challenge today is to ensure the knowledge, competencies and skills of all stakeholders in local food systems, so as to promote food safety, food and nutrition education, and the reduction of losses and waste as part of the country’s overall strategy.
