Firearms deadline registration ends in Brazil

Brasilia, May 3 (Prensa Latina) The Brazilian Government decreed the deadline for the registration of firearms of permitted or restricted use by their owners.

On March 29th, the Executive published that it would extend the expiring date until April 3rd, in response to a request from parliamentarians linked to the public security sector.

According to the order, “firearms for permitted and restricted use acquired since the issue of the decree 9,785 of May 7th, 2019 will be registered in the National Weapons System”, including those registered in other procedures.

The number of weapons in circulation in Brazil has grown in recent years due to the purchase incentive and facility policy adopted during the government of president Jair Bolsonaro.

More than 824,000 weapons have been acquired since February, when the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva opened the registration period. Nevertheless, the Army system, points to 772,000 weapons.

Of the total weapons accounted for, 782.3 thousand are of permitted use and 41.7 thousand of restricted calibers.

At the end of the term, whoever has not registered their firearm may have their weapon confiscated and answer for the crimes of illegal carrying and possession, provided for in the 2003 Disarmament Regulations.
