Cuba supports Unesco process about education for peace

margarita-mc
Paris, May 30 (Prensa Latina) Cuban expert Margarita Mc Pherson spoke on Tuesday at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the process to update the 1974 Recommendation, which seeks to strengthen education as a promoter of peace, cooperation and human rights.

At its Paris headquarters, the multilateral organization opened four days of debates on Tuesday to promote consensus among member States on an adaptation of the Recommendation to the new times, with challenges that include the achievement of sustainable development.

We think that Cuba’s participation in the revision and updating process is very important, because the main guidelines and approaches of the 1974 Recommendation are in tune with the positions defended by Cuba regarding inclusive and lifelong education, Mc Pherson explained to Prensa Latina.

According to the Education Ministry official, there is also coincidence in elements such as the comprehensive training of the new generations, personality development, human rights, global citizenship and sustainable development, which, she recalled, are Cuba’s priorities.

This process contributes to the preparation of a new Education Law in Cuba as well as to management issues, she pointed out.

The expert pointed out that Cuba participated in consultations within the framework of UNESCO’s updating of its 1974 Recommendation, which made it possible to prepare a report on the integration of the sustainable development goals into national strategic objectives.

Mc Pherson said that Cuba has made proposals in areas ranging from history to the concepts of transformative education and education for sustainable development.

In her statements to Prensa Latina, the Cuban delegate described as enriching and profitable the ongoing process, which seeks to submit a proposal to update the Recommendation to the UNESCO General Conference at this year’s end.
