Chile decrees agricultural emergency due to heavy rains

Santiago de Chile, Jun 27 (Prensa Latina) The Chilean government on Tuesday decided to decree a state of agricultural alert from the central Region of Valparaiso to the southern Bio Bio due to the serious damages caused by the recent frontal system.

Minister of Agriculture Esteban Valenzuela revealed so after a meeting with producers and public entities, including the National Irrigation Commission and the Forestry Corporation.

Valenzuela pointed out the urgency of supplying food for large and small livestock, being of assistance to the beekeeping sector and completing the diagnosis of the damages in order to assess the exact amount of the losses.

The minister further said that there will be a remission or rescheduling of credits and new loans will be offered at soft interest rates, as happened with the people affected by the wildfires at the onset of 2023.

The president of the National Agricultural Society, Antonio Walker, reported the damage caused by the storm to the country’s water infrastructure.

Walker detailed that intakes, floodgates, canals and irrigation systems were destroyed. However, he assured that there is no reason to increase the prices of fruit and vegetables to the population and urged to denounce any attempt of speculation.

According to a new balance sheet on Tuesday released by the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service, the death toll from the rains has remained at two, there have been four missing persons and 13,370 people have been affected.
