Panama speeds up destruction of firearms

Panama, Jul 1 (Prensa Latina) In an open fight against gangs and organized crime, the National Police of Panama destroyed 1020 firearms, according to an official statement.

According to the report from the Ministry of Security (Minseg), the operation took place on Thursday in the presence of national and capital authorities, including Governor Carla García and the director of Patrimonial Assets at the Ministry of Economy and Finances, Orlando Barria.

Security Minister Juan Manuel Pino pointed out that this was the 37th ceremony of this kind during the administration of President Laurentino Cortizo (2019-2024).

The official explained specified that 349 of the total number of weapons destroyed came from criminal activities, 642 were property of the National Police and others belong to the National Aero-Naval Service and were in disuse.

García praised this kind of actions, which is the result of the efforts made by security agencies to reduce the crime rates on the streets.

The governor pointed out that part of the weapons came from the ‘Pacificando mi barrio construyendo el futuro’ (Pacifying my neighborhood, building the future) program, which has contributed to the exchange of weapons for vouchers to access the markets since December 2021

To date, 721 firearms, 57,555 rounds of ammunition, 322 explosives, 657 suppliers and 176 accessories have been voluntarily surrendered by citizens, she noted.
