Calamities suffered by migrant women in Panama are pointed out

Panama City, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) Irregular migrant women suffer the greatest calamities on their way through the Darien jungle, in Panama, on their way to the United States, an international forum on the subject explained.

The Minister of Women’s Affairs, Juana Herrera, pointed out that in this journey through the jungle, on the border with Colombia, women face several dangers, many of them are pregnant, travel with their children, some have seen them die, suffer and are victims of physical and sexual violence, among other types of abuses.

Speaking at the V Regional Congress of Women in the Contexts of Migration: “Migration has a woman’s face: for the respect and integrity of their rights”, the minister said that the risks are intensifying in Darien, a route that so far this year has been crossed by some 48,773 women and more than 18,000 girls.

According to statistics of the National Migration Service, up to July 5, 201,167 travelers crossed the jungle, mostly Venezuelans, Haitians and Ecuadorians, a figure that exceeds that of the first half of 2022 when 49,452 people used this route.
