Cuban baseball player Yoandy Garlobo dies

Havana, Jul 16 (Prensa Latina) Prominent Cuban baseball player Yoandy Garlobo died in his province of Matanzas, east of this capital, the local government confirmed on its Facebook account on Sunday.

Garlobo, who was chosen the best designated hitter in the All-Star team of the first World Classic in 2006, died of a serious decompensation from diabetes at the age of 46.

The Jit digital portal, attached to the Cuban Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder), reported that sports authorities, including Inder President Osvaldo Vento, expressed their regret and conveyed their condolences for such a sensitive loss.

Garlobo was born on January 12, 1977, in Jovellanos, the birthplace of great baseball players such as the Sánchez brothers (Wilfredo, Armando, Fernando and Arturo), pitchers Jorge Luis Valdés and Carlos Mesa, and outfielders Alberto Marcial “Sagüita” Hernández, Lázaro Contreras. and José Estrada, among others.

He participated in 16 Cuban baseball series, in which he was third baseman and outfielder, with a high offensive average of .335, 109 home runs, 663 runs scored and 621 RBIs.

Internationally, his main successes were the subtitle at the World Classic in 2006 and as a member of the team that was crowned youth world champion in 1995 in Boston, where he was also included in the All-Stars team of the event.
