Review of case against Macri began in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) The Criminal Cassation Chamber began today the process to decide whether to confirm the dismissal of a case against former Argentine President Mauricio Macri for the alleged spying on relatives of the crew members of the ARA San Juan submarine.

According to the news agency Télam, the hearing began at 10:00 local time in courtroom II of that instance before judges Guillermo Yacobucci, Ángela Ledesma and Mariano Borinsky.

As part of the schedule, Paula Litvachky, lawyer of the Center for Legal and Social Studies, Luis Tagliapietra and Valeria Carreras, lawyers for the families of the victims, and representatives of the former president and members of the Federal Intelligence Agency (AFI) will present their arguments.

“If the Chamber approves the acquittal of Macri, it will validate an incorrect premise, which will deviate from the guidelines on the protection of human rights. The AFI has no direct role in presidential security,” Litvachky pointed out.

The submarine, of German manufacture, departed from the southern city of Ushuaia and lost contact with the Navy on November 15, 2017.

It was searched for during the first days in an operation that included the use of advanced technology and the participation of 15 countries, after which the company Ocean Infinity was hired, which finally found its whereabouts a year later.

The relatives of the 44 officers who died in that event denounced Macri for alleged espionage against them, while they were waiting for news of their loved ones.

In July 2022, Judges Pablo Bertuzzi, Mariano Llorens and Leopoldo Bruglia, of the Capital Chamber, decided to end the process, despite the existence of evidence and, in addition to the former head of state, 12 members of the AFI implicated in the case were acquitted.
