Favorable conditions for tobacco planting in Cuban province

Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) The existence of favorable conditions to begin the "winter season" in various vegetable crops on Friday, was highlighted here as a benefit from Tropical Storm Idalia in western Cuba.

In this regard, Minister of Agriculture (MINAG), Idael Perez noted the implementation of preventive measures to protect the tobacco infrastructure in this province, Cuba’s top producer of this exportable item.

The meteorological event, which made landfall last Monday night, when it crossed Cabo de San Antonio as a tropical storm, did not damage the raw materials demanded by the cigar industry, according to Perez.

He described as a good tactic the laying of protective blankets on the roofs of warehouses and tobacco houses that sheltered some 18,000 tons of leafs prior to hurricane.

The Minister of Agriculture called on Pinar del Río tobacco growers and companies to work hard in the preparation of soils for the coming winter season, the collection of wood to build the remaining tobacco houses and the planting of some 13,000 hectares of the crop as planned for this stage.
