Presidential debate, key tool for voting in Ecuador

Quito, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) The presidential debate for the second round of the general elections in Ecuador is classified today as a key tool for the vote of the 13.4 million citizens here.

The Ecuavisa channel highlighted this Tuesday that on October 1, when the meeting will take place, candidates for the leadership of the Executive, Luisa González of the Citizen Revolution movement (RC) and Daniel Noboa of National Democratic Action (ADN) will have greater interaction that the debate between the candidates in the first electoral round failed to reach the depth of their proposals, which generated new criticism of the National Electoral Council (CNE) as organizer.

Recently, the president of the RC, Marcela Aguiñaga, assured that her political group would change its communication strategy during the second round of the elections here.

Aguiñaga recognized certain errors of her candidate González de ella, such as appealing to the past during the government of former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017).

For his part, Noboa was positioned as the winner of the debate in the first round by the pollster Comunicaliza. According to that site, the candidate who represents the right in the Andean country dedicated himself to talking only about his proposals without questioning other opponents.

On August 13, the presidential debate of the first round of voting left a bittersweet feeling amid strong criticism among citizens and analysts of the Andean country.

Local media outlets described the interventions at that time as not very deep and very confrontational, since the space began with discussions between moderators and candidates, just when they had to propose their plans around issues such as security, economy, health, education and others of interest for the South American nation.

For Security specialist Carla Álvarez, it was essential to listen to the proposals, but due to the poor organization of the meeting it was not possible. It’s not clear what the candidates are going to do, she said.

For his part, former vice chancellor Kintto Lucas stated that the space was another example of the country’s chaos. A shameful format, he expressed, surely school children would have organized it better, he expressed.

Likewise, the sociologist and analyst Hernán Reyes questioned the constant interruptions of the moderators which, according to him, prevented the candidates from developing their answers as is their right.

The Code of Democracy in Ecuador establishes that the debate must be to contrast government programs and programmatic proposals, subjecting itself to the questioning of its rivals, moderators and citizens.

The elections held on August 20 confirmed that the political movement led by former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) is the strongest in the country, whose candidate González came in first place among the eight contenders and guaranteed a large parliamentary bench, although without achieving the majority.

González won the vote in 14 provinces of the country, while Noboa, her contender in the second round, came in first place in six territories.

Both will compete for the Presidency of the Republic in a runoff that will take place on October 15 and where the votes of their opponents’ electorate will be at stake.
