Uruguayan feminists in solidarity with Palestinian cause

Montevideo, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women will be commemorated here today with mobilizations called by feminist groups.

In this capital the Intersocial Feminist called for a concentration in the afternoon in Plaza Libertad, which will be followed by a rally along the emblematic 18 de Julio Avenue under the slogan “United for peace and in solidarity with the people of Palestine”.

We declare that the Palestinian people are not alone, says a declaration that calls to “defend life against the massacre”. The proclamation adds groups of the Lgbtiq+ community and affirms that “the Palestinian cause is also a feminist one”.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women honors the sisters Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal, Dominican activists who confronted the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and were assassinated.

The date is also a reason to denounce aggressions and crimes against women.

A recent report by the Ministry of the Interior revealed that from January to October of this year 19 femicides were committed in Uruguay.

According to the report, the MI received in that period 35,567 complaints of domestic violence and “associated crimes”, a figure that is increasing, compared to the last two years.
