Paraguayan Public Prosecutor’s Office studies nepotism in Congress

Asuncion, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) Requesting the Paraguayan Congress by the Public Prosecutor's Office for reports on six lawmakers and their relatives accused of nepotism seeks to "have a complete X-ray" of these practices, Ultima Hora daily commented on Wednesday.

The hired parliamentarians’ relatives who are paid and do not attend the Congress are exposed to the punishable act of undue collection of fees, the prosecutor of the Anticorruption Unit of that portfolio in charge of the case Belinda Bobadilla referred.

The judicial agent, who is investigating four lawmakers, two senators and their relatives for alleged nepotism in the Legislative Branch, noted the seriousness of the crime “in the alleged case of excessive hiring in that instance.”

Bobadilla confirmed she sent official letters to the Administration and Finance Department to report on the remunerations and payment statements or receipts since the relatives of the parliamentarians took office.

The official further asked the Human Resources Department of both Chambers for the complete file of those persons, as well as the places where they should render services, positions, functions, schedules, copies of resolutions or administrative acts of appointment or hiring, along with the documents submitted.

The Prosecutor of Economic Crimes requested on Tuesday the first briefings on alleged people involved in nepotism practices in the Congress, a scourge in which high ranking personalities and their relatives are protagonists of a current scandal, according to Ultima Hora daily.

The list of data on nepotism includes Montserrat Alliana, daughter of Vice-President Pedro Alliana; and Alejandro Ovelar, scion of the head of Congress, Silvio Beto Ovelar, both cases of families involved in the scandal triggered at the end of 2023 against the Legislative and the Government.
