NGOs demand ceasefire in Gaza and more aid for Palestinians

Ramallah, Feb 16 (Prensa Latina) Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) called on Friday for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and a massive increase in humanitarian aid to prevent famine in the territory, which is home to more than two million Palestinians.

Allowing humanitarian access to the civilian population is an obligation under International Humanitarian Law, the NGOs stressed in a joint statement.

The risk of famine in Gaza is increasing every day due to the ongoing hostilities and the Israeli blockade, they stated.

The call criticized the use of famine as a method of warfare.

It recalled that “starvation of the civilian population is illegal under International Humanitarian Law and is a direct violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2417.” It also questioned the siege tactics imposed by the Israeli military forces, the shelling of densely populated areas, and the country’s refusal to send humanitarian aid missions into northern Gaza.

Action Against Hunger, ActionAid, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and Save the Children, among other NGOs, signed the statement.
