UK’s FM expresses interest in improving ties with Paraguay

Asuncion, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) UK Foreign Minister David Cameron expressed on Wednesday his interest in strengthening ties with Paraguay.

The head of British diplomacy, who began a visit to the country on Tuesday to travel later to Brazil, discussed the subject with Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, who received him at the Government headquarters in the Lopez Palace.

Cameron described his stay in Paraguay as historic, the first by a British foreign minister in 171 years of mutual relations, the diplomat underscored at a briefing with the press, which excluded questions.

This is “a real opportunity to build a steadfast partnership for the future” between the United Kingdom and Paraguay, the FM assured.

Meanwhile, Peña granted at the meeting that the relation between the two nations is based on shared values, and referred to “many great common opportunities.”

Likewise, Paraguayan Foreign Minister Ruben Ramirez celebrated the fact that for the first time in the history of those relations a British Secretary for International Relations is traveling to the country.

“This visit represents a strengthening of the ties between our two countries and an opportunity to make progress on a series of issues,” Ramirez stated.

The head of the local diplomacy recalled that Paraguay exports some USD$120 million in goods to the United Kingdom every year and imports USD$65 million from the UK.

The sides informed the press that they discussed opportunities to work in conjunction on environmental and sustainability issues, as well as on “global problems.”
