Reduction of gas consumption is extended in Europe

Brussels, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) Energy ministers of the European Union (EU) agreed today to maintain for another year, until March 2025, the coordinated measures to reduce gas demand by 15 percent.

This is a voluntary target to which they committed themselves in order to break Russia’s dependence on fossil fuels.

As the emergency legislation to reduce demand expires on March 31 and the situation is more stable than in the last two years, the EU executive now invited member states to continue to take voluntary measures to maintain the adjustment.

The gas demand reduction regulation was adopted as an emergency instrument in 2022, in response to the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

Despite the overall improvement in the supply situation, according to the latest reports from the European Commission, the situation on world gas markets remains difficult, so member states want to be prepared for any possible supply disruptions.
