DR reaffirms absence of agreement with UN for airlift to Haiti

Santo Domingo, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez reiterated today the non-existence of an agreement between his country and the United Nations (UN) for the establishment of an air bridge between Santo Domingo and Haiti.

Alvarez said he does not know the reasons for the insistence on a fact which is not true and which, according to Diario Libre, was even clarified at the United Nations headquarters in New York by the Dominican ambassador to that organization, Jose Blanco.

The Foreign Minister specified that the Dominican Republic does cooperate for the evacuation of UN personnel as well as of other international organizations and foreign embassies established in the neighboring country, and pointed out that it uses its own aircrafts to return to Santo Domingo exclusively nationals residing in that nation.

The Government informed last Sunday that it evacuated 27 nationals living there and that due to the situation of violence and insecurity affecting that nation, they requested to leave voluntarily due to the difficulty of returning by ordinary means.

He specified that three helicopters of the Dominican Republic Air Force, a military agency of the Defense Ministry, participated in the operation and pointed out that the entry of the aircrafts into Haitian airspace was authorized by the Haitian Foreign Ministry.
