Power outages affect thousands in Uruguay after storm

Montevideo, Mar 21 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's state-owned electric company, UTE, informed that thousands of customers lack electricity after a storm that hit most of the country on early Thursday.

UTE stated on Thursday morning that 95,590 users lack electrical services.

The heavy rains and powerful gusts of wind brought down power poles and trees on power lines.

Tacuarembó, Rivera, Cerro Largo, and Rocha reported most power cuts.

The red alert was in effect for harsh storms in most of Uruguay, where damage to roofs and institutions, rivers and streams overflow, flooded streets, and cutting roads and highways were reported.

The National Emergency System is conducting an assessment across the country.
