Argentine State Workers Association protests against layoffs

Buenos Aires, Apr 3 (Prensa Latina) Members of the State Workers Association (ATE) of Argentina will hold massive and simultaneous protests across government organizations and ministries as part of a day of fighting against layoffs in the public administration.

As informed by the organization, the protests will take place starting at 07:00, local time, and will involve employees from the permanent staff, contract workers, and those who were notified of their dismissal. In addition, a plenary session will be held at 3:30 p.m. with delegates from all over the country to debate the intensification of the rallies.

ATE General Secretary, Rodolfo Aguiar, denounced on X that more than 11 thousand people were laid off last weekend, and accused President Javier Milei of violating the laws. “Provoking massive layoffs in the State is suppressing fundamental rights of the people, and that is a conduct typified in our Penal Code.

Aguiar described the Government as “harmful and cruel” and assured that each dismissal “becomes an ordeal for the worker and the family who suffers it, but also behind each job that is lost, there is a public policy that is dismantled. Faced with the social tragedy it is causing, we will defend ourselves with the most effective tools we have: exercising our rights to strike, demonstrate, and freedom of expression,” he added.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the Executive is “dangerous and ruthless”, which is why he announced “the repudiation of any act of repression that might be ordered from the Casa Rosada. We hope that past scenarios are not repeated, that the public administration may not be militarized, and the police may not block the doors of the ministries with lists of who can or cannot enter,” he added.
