Havana’s underwater tunnel is being repaired

Havana, Apr 8 (Prensa Latina) An underwater tunnel in Havana is being repaired on Monday, as part of a project that initially includes the Havana-Cabañas path, which has been closed since cracks were found last Saturday at dawn.

On Facebook, Transport Minister Eduardo Rodriguez posted that all the resources and construction forces are available for the repair of the Havana Bay tunnel, which is considered one of the seven wonders of Cuba’s civil engineering.

The minister explained that work began with the demolition of the pavement to replace the first grate, which is of paramount significance for the evacuation of water, as it has moved from its original place over the years.

According to Rodriguez, three days will be devoted to demolition, formwork and concreting, and then seven days will be spent in the first phase of concrete curing, until the tunnel will be reopened.

The National Applied Research Company, attached to the Ministry of Construction is in charge of conducting the required tests on the concrete, which will determine the resumption of vehicle traffic, Rodriguez added.

The minister said that taking advantage of the tunnel closure, other construction and maintenance activities will be done, like the patching with hot asphalt concrete to fill the visible holes in the 700 meters of the closed path.
