US Film director George Lucas to receive honorary award at Cannes

Paris, Apr 9 (Prensa Latina) Famous American filmmaker George Lucas, director of Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, will receive the honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Festival, it was announced today.

The list of illustrious guests at the 77th edition of the great event of the seventh art on the paradisiacal Côte d’Azur continues to grow with the name of the 79-year-old director and founder of production companies such as Lucasfilm, a day after it was reported that the also renowned director Kevin Costner will present the premiere of Horizon, an American Saga.

In a statement circulated here, the Cannes Festival described the several-times award winner and multi-Oscar nominee, who in 1991 was awarded the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award, considered an honorary Oscar, as an “immense figure of Hollywood cinema.”

Just by mentioning the name of Lucas, who will receive the Palme d’Or on May 25 at the closing ceremony, an entire chapter of the seventh art is illuminated and some unforgettable musical notes by John Williams resonate, the statement stressed.

The Festival that will start on May 14 in the Mediterranean French city insisted on honoring the California native director in advance, remembering the incomparable pleasure that he has provided to viewers around the world with his blockbusters.

The list of blockbuster hits is long, either as a director or in the role of screenwriter, with six of the films in the Star Wars saga between 1977 and 2005, and as the person responsible for the story in four Indiana Jones installments. , all directed by the giant Steven Spielberg between 1981 and 2008.

“The Cannes Festival has always held a special place in my heart,” said Lucas, who recalled that with surprise and pride he accepted that his first film THX-1138 was selected for the 1971 edition.
