President of Bolivia will speak at CELAC Summit

La Paz, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) President of Bolivia Luis Arce will participate on Tuesday in an emergency Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on the events at the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, as informed by an official source.

“(…) An emergency meeting will be held, a Summit of Heads of State, of which Bolivia will be a part to continue addressing this issue (Mexico-Ecuador). The participation of our brother president is confirmed,” announced the Foreign Minister of Bolivia, Celinda Sosa, who added that the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, reported that the Extraordinary Virtual Summit of Heads of State and Government was rescheduled for Tuesday, April 16th at the request of Mexico.

Sosa specified that the forum will address Ecuador´s violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention and the 1954 Asylum Convention when a police contingent busted into the embassy in Quito at dawn on April 6th and kidnapped former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas, who was staying in the embassy under political asylum and physically mistreated the ambassador, Roberto Canseco.

Because it was a violation of the Vienna Charter, which establishes diplomatic immunity, the operation was condemned by the Bolivian Government and the rest of the international community.

“Being a pacifist country, Bolivia will always advocate for dialogue as the mechanism to see these controversies and find solutions to conflicts that may occur,” said Sosa, who also reiterated the categorical rejection of the invasion of the Mexican Embassy; however, she explained that Bolivia maintains its brotherhood with the Ecuadorian people.

“We have expressed ourselves categorically rejecting the assault that Ecuador has committed against the Mexican Embassy,” emphasized the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who added that it is unacceptable to violate an embassy because a politician is under political asylum in it and that the Government of President Arce promotes “spaces for dialogue and debate to consolidate integrity, the Latin American union, to preserve and consolidate a region of peace.”
