Costa Rica has reported 100 forest fires in 2024

San José, Apr 16 (Prensa Latina) The Costa Rican Fire Department reported 100 forest fires so far this year, two times more than in the same period of 2023.

In the same period of 2023, 45 forest fires were reported. Practically one forest fire a day has been registered, the highest figure in the last 10 years, the institution said in a press release.

According to official statistics, 21,800 hectares have been consumed by the flames in 2024 to date, which is equivalent to 51,800 soccer fields or 26 times the canton of Tibás, the emergency corps added.

This figure is really alarming, because due to the strong winds, some people set fires that get out of control and can cause more fires, it warned.

This year has been critical for our ecosystems. To date (first week of April), we have attended to 48 incidents in wildland protected areas and 1,561 hectares have burned, the coordinator of the Fire Management Program in the National System of Conservation Areas, Oscar Mora, warned.
