Chilean far right’s maneuver against communist lawmaker fails

Santiago, Chile, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) Karol Cariola of the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh) is currently the president of the Chamber of Deputies after failing a far-right maneuver against the leadership of the legislative body.

The plenary session of the Lower House rejected a motion of censure on Monday presented by the opposition against Cariola and the vice presidents of that body, Eric Aedo and Gaspar Rivas, with 76 votes against, 69 for, and seven abstentions.

A group of lawmakers from the extremist Republican Party and the Social Christian Party filed the motion alleging a supposed interventionism by the Executive in the legislative body.

The lawmakers and political leaders denounced that the aim was to give a soft blow to Cariola because of her communist militancy.

“This vote consolidates the Chamber’s table and exposes a criticism that did not make sense, that had no legal or political basis, and was a failed move,” Luis Cuello, head of the Communist Party, said.

On April 15, Cariola became the first Communist lawmaker to be elected as the legislative body’s president, a fact described here as historic.
