Angola: We must prevent Palestinian people from being exterminated

Lisbon, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) Angolan President João Lourenço on Thursday demanded the end of the war over the Palestinian people as well as violations of international humanitarian law that put this population at risk of being exterminated.

“The time has come to demand an end to this war and to start taking, without further delay, concrete and necessary steps for the de facto creation of the State of Palestine,” said the Angolan leader during the commemorative act for the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, in Portugal.

Lourenço stressed that the various UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions in this regard must be implemented, as the only sure and lasting way to solve this long-standing conflict, in the interests of the peoples of Israel and Palestine.

The Head of State strongly condemned the action of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7 after killing Israeli citizens and taking hundreds of hostages who must be released.

However, he described Israel’s reaction as disproportionate and said that no action can become a carte blanche or “green light to indiscriminately kill children, women, the elderly, bedridden patients, journalists and workers of international humanitarian organizations”.

Lourenço added that international humanitarian law must be respected in war situations and also stressed the world cannot allow the Palestinian people to be exterminated by bombs and by denial of access to food, water and medical care.

“There are no terrorist peoples, the Palestinian people are like all peoples, a peaceful people who want to live in peace and harmony, within the framework of an internationally recognized state,” Lourenço stressed.

The Angolan president warned that the international community must as much as possible to avoid the imminent likelihood of the conflict escalating and spreading in the region.
