Montevideo, May 6 (Prensa Latina) Authorities in several departments in northern Uruguay are preparing for possible floods, after heavy rains and washouts in southern Brazil.

Eyes are on the banks of the Uruguay River, where water may flow from Brazil, where floods have killed nearly 100 people and others are missing.

The Departmental Emergency Committee of Artigas, in the north of Uruguay, expects the river to exceed the safety level 6.30 meters in the city of Bella Unión.

The Emergency Coordinator in the department of Salto said that the homonymous capital city was affected by the rains that fell in Brazil, and informed that the first 15 families will be evacuated on Monday, weeks after up to more than 5,000 people were displaced by floods in the north and west of Uruguay.

Part of northern Uruguay borders the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, which is facing the worst natural tragedy in its history.
