Chile: Mapuche leader Héctor Llaitul sentenced to 23 years in prison

Santiago de Chile, May 7 (Prensa Latina) A Chilean court on Tuesday sentenced Mapuche leader Héctor Llaitul to 23 years behind bars for committing several crimes, in a sentence his defense attorneys considered as racist and politically driven.

“We consider this sentence to be completely unjust, since neither the crimes he was accused for nor his involvement in the events was proven,” said attorney Victoria Bórquez.

The Oral Criminal Court of Temuco sentenced Llaitul, spokesperson for the Arauco Malleco Coordinator, to 15 years in prison for crimes set forth in the Law of Internal Security of the State, such as incitement and apology for violence; five years for theft of wood and another three years for attacking authorities.

We believe this decision is based on a political and racist persecution, since he is a werkén (Mapuche authority), said the Bórquez.
