Washington, May 7 (Prensa Latina) China's special envoy for climate change, Liu Zhenmin, will participate in a bilateral meeting in the United States to follow up on the climate agreements between Washington and Beijing.

According to local media, Liu will meet with his US counterpart, John Podesta, which will resume bilateral talks on climate cooperation in a context in which tensions persist over issues such as trade and security between the parties.

The Chinese official’s visit, which will last until May 16, is his first travel since taking office after replacing Xie Zhenhua, who left this responsibility in January for health reasons.

Podesta took over as the US top climate diplomat in early 2024, succeeding former Secretary of State John Kerry.

The two sides will have an in-depth exchange of views on the Sunnylands Declaration on strengthening cooperation to address the climate crisis and other consensuses guided by the agreements reached by the heads of State of the two countries, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China said.

The goal is to promote climate cooperation between China and the United States in order to achieve practical results, the ministry emphasized.

Liu’s program also includes a visit to New York.
