Nine dead due to collapse of stage during campaign rally in Mexico

Mexico City, May 23 (Prensa Latina) At least nine people died and 70 were hospitalized when a stage collapsed during a campaign event of the Citizens' Movement in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, the governor of that entity, Samuel Garcia, informed.

“Update: 70 hospitalized, 9 deaths and 11 patients were discharged,” Garcia said in a message through his account on the social network X, in which he previously detailed that a minor is among the deceased.

Also on X, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador lamented the accident that occurred in San Pedro Garza García “caused by a strong wind during the event attended by Jorge Álvarez Máynez, presidential candidate for Movimiento Ciudadano and other militants, leaders” and contenders of that party.

“I embrace the families, friends of the victims and sympathizers of that organization. We are attentive,” the president said last night.

According to information from the state Civil Protection, a metallic structure of several tons and a gigantic canvas fell on supporters of the political party who attended the event, which was the closing act of the campaign of Lorenia Canavati, the party’s standard bearer for the local mayor’s office.
