Cuban President urges country to step up recovery efforts

Havana, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today urged his compatriots to work in an organized and effective manner, so as to quickly return to normality in the territories affected by Hurricane Rafael.

Now the important thing to do is to unleashed a hurricane of work, said the president in Surgidero de Batabanó, a town in the western province of Mayabeque, according to information from the Presidency of the Republic released in X.

Likewise, he thanked the locals for the efforts displayed in the evacuation process carried out in that coastal area, where over 2,900 people had to be evacuated, due to the danger of flooding.

Díaz-Canel also acknowledged the Red Cross ‘s performance, as they “in the middle of the hurricane, rescued people trapped in a landslide and put them in safekeeping.”

The head of state arrived in this southern territory after presiding over the National Defense Council, visiting the province of Artemisa for the second time and also the municipality of Quivicán, another jurisdiction of Mayabeque.

The day before, he started touring affected areas, to assess the damage caused by Rafael, a hurricane that hit western Cuba last Wednesday as a category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Artemisa and Mayabeque are two of the most badly hit provinces, mainly on their agriculture patches, the telecommunications network, water supply systems, electric service and public and private buildings.
