Data from the US government show that the South American giant is the second largest supplier of steel, in volume, for that market, behind only of Canada. So far, the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has not yet officially commented on possible retaliation or negotiations with the Republican administration.
The digital tax, as the taxation of digital platforms such as Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, Google and Spotify is known, it is a measure that has been debated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade is also preparing a study on the sectors most affected by the White House’s trade war.
The northern country is Brazil’s second largest trading partner. In 2024, Brazilian exports to the United States totaled 40.3 billion dollars, corresponding to 12 percent of the nation’s total foreign sales.
Regarding imports of North American products, the figures reached 40.6 billion dollars, meaning 15.5 percent of the total concerned.
National exports are concentrated in products related to commodities (consumer goods), the main ones being crude and refined petroleum oils, worth 7.6 billion dollars.
Iron and steel products, including ferroalloys, ingots and other primary forms, total 5.9 billion dollars. Together, they represent 34 percent of the total exported to the United States.
On the import side, power generation equipment (mainly motors and non-electric machines) is the largest category, totaling $7.1 billion (18 percent of total imports).
Brazil currently faces tariffs imposed by the United States.
The U.S. government applies an average rate of 8.6 percent to Brazilian agricultural products and a reduced tariff of 1.1 percent to non-agricultural products.
However, about 66 percent of goods and 62 percent of the total value of Brazilian exports to the United States enter that market without the incidence of tariffs.
