A total of 6,488 complaints were filed, and the most recurrent cases include sexual violence (64 percent), physical violence (20 percent), and psychological and emotional violence (21 percent).
The number of incidents of gender-based violence stood at 631, for an increase of 38 percent compared to October and November combined.
This spike could be explained by the fact that gang attacks increased in frequency and intensity, which increases the vulnerability of the population, the digital newspaper Haiti Libre commented.
Some victims have been so deeply traumatized that they cannot even narrate exactly what happened to them, and others, for fear of reprisals, choose not to denounce their perpetrators.
In Haiti, legal services remain expensive, which is an obstacle to effectively combating this scourge.
To some extent, it is impossible to know the extent of actual cases, as statistics depend on the voluntary declaration of the victims.
