Persecution of Ecuador’s opposition mayors denounced

Quito, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) Recent decisions affecting the mayors of Quito and Guayaquil, the largest cities in Ecuador, are considered today as political persecution in the electoral context, since they represent the opposition movement Citizen Revolution (CR).

The Litigious Electoral Court (LEC) ordered this Friday to the National Electoral Council to deliver forms for the collection of signatures and to activate the process of revocation of the mandate of Quito’s mayor, Pabel Muñoz, accused of alleged breach of duties.

In response, Muñoz described as “coincidence’ the decision of the LEC and affirmed that his commitment with the people of Quito and with the most beautiful city in the world” will not stop neither by hate politics nor by a few petty bullshit.

Former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), leader of the CR, stated that the Court’s decision came hours after Muñoz criticized ‘the clumsy and unconstitutional ban on cell phones when voting’.

“It arrives for all of you, the new show and persecution: the impeachment of the mayor.” Each time you destroy more and more the Homeland, he stressed.

The former president, who has denounced links between the LEC and the current president aspiring to reelection, Daniel Noboa, wrote in his X account.

At the same time, the Executive is promoting actions against the Guayaquil mayor, Aquiles Alvarez, whose administration Noboa decided to withdraw the management of the Samanes Park, considered the green lung of the coastal city.

The confrontation between the President and Alvarez, who also represents the CR, worsened in July 2024, when the Government denounced the municipal official and his brothers for alleged irregular fuel trade, which led to raids and the Triple A case.

Also this week, in the electoral context, the Government Minister, Jose De La Gasca, announced that the Executive sent to the National Assembly a bill to reform the penal code and the judicial function and called it ‘Talon de Aquiles’ (Achilles’ Heel).

Lawyer Sonia Vera considered that the project ‘Talon de Aquiles’ is not only a demonstration of abuse of power, but a clear proof that they have lost the institutional compass.

“If they believe that with maneuvers of this type they can politically annihilate Aquiles Alvarez, they are ignoring a basic principle of history: political persecutions only strengthen those who suffer them and unmask those who promote them,” asserted Vera.

All these actions against local CR officials take place less than a month before the second round of elections on April 13, when Noboa and CR’s Luisa Gonzalez will face each other at the polls and citizens will elect the next president of Ecuador.
