Following President Donald Trump’s recent statements about a possible reduction in tariffs imposed on all products from China, the spokesperson stated that “the tariff war and the trade war have no winners, protectionism has no future, and decoupling will only isolate those who promote it.”
According to Guo, China’s position is clear: “We don’t want to fight, but we don’t fear it either. If they confront us, we will respond; if they want to negotiate, our doors are open.”
The spokespman emphasized that if the United States wishes to resolve problems through dialogue, it must cease threats and extortion and base talks on principles of equality, respect, and mutual benefit. “Saying you want to reach an agreement while exerting extreme pressure is not the right way to deal with China, and it won’t work,” he emphasized.
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin recently stated that Washington’s goal is not economic decoupling with China, but rather reaching a comprehensive agreement within two to three years.
However, Guo Jiakun insisted that any attempt to impose unilateral conditions will be rejected by China.
Economists and business leaders believe that the US tariff policies against Beijing pose a risk of decoupling between the two economies, which would seriously damage the global trading system.
