The RSF attacked the Osman Digna airbase, a goods warehouse and several civilian facilities located around the coastal city’s airport, reported the military spokesman.
The attackers used suicide drones, a recurrent tactic in recent clashes. Despite the scale of the attack, authorities reported no fatalities.
Port Sudan, key to the military and administrative control of the northeast of the country, is home to government headquarters, an international airport and a strategic military base.
The action represents a direct threat to the last relatively stable bastion under government control.
According to reports, Sudanese anti-aircraft defenses managed to intercept part of the drones, although witnesses reported smoke plumes in the affected areas.
This incident occurs in a context of escalation of the conflict, with recent aggressions of the FAR in the states of Nile, North and West Kordofan.
The Sudanese military described the aggression against Port Sudan as ‘a dangerous turn’ in the civil war, and authorities warned of possible repercussions for regional security in the Red Sea.
