China criticizes US intentions on arms sales to Taiwan

Beijing, May 30 (Prensa Latina) China rejected the United States' announcement of a possible increase in arms sales to Taiwan, a measure that would further strain bilateral relations.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian recalled that matters related to Taiwan are at the core of China’s fundamental interests and the first red line that cannot be crossed in Sino-US relations. For this reason, he urged Washington to comply with the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiqués between the two countries, halt arms sales to Taipei, and stop creating tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

The US administration’s announcement further strains bilateral ties, at a time when Beijing also rejected the decision to revoke visas for Chinese students and the latest US export control measures affecting the semiconductor industry.

China recently expressed deep concern following Washington’s decision to release $5.3 billion in foreign aid funds, including $870 million for military assistance to Taiwan.

The Foreign Ministry expressed its strong displeasure with the State Department’s modification to the fact sheet on US-Taiwan relations after the US administration removed the phrase “The United States does not support Taiwan independence,” which Beijing interpreted as a serious violation of the one-China principle.

The Chinese government has repeatedly denounced the use of Taipei by the United States and other countries as a means of containing China. Beijing previously responded to such measures with sanctions targeting US military companies.

Currently, 183 nations, including the United States, support the one-China policy.
