Daesh attacks Syrian government forces for the first time

Damascus, May 31 (Prensa Latina) The terrorist group Islamic State, known as Daesh in Arabic, claimed responsibility today for its first attack against Syrian government forces since the fall of Bashar Al-Assad's government last December.

A statement from the group announced the detonation of an explosive device planted in advance by what it called the “soldiers of the Caliphate” against a military vehicle in the desert area of Tulul Al-Safa, in the east of the province of Sweida, southeast of Damascus.

This is the first attack claimed by Daesh against the new Syrian government forces.

Last week, the transitional government’s security forces announced the arrest of several members of this radical group following operations carried out in the towns of Kisweh, Deir Khabiyeh, Al-Muqaylibah, and Zakia, south and southwest of Damascus.

On the 16th of this month, security forces carried out an operation against a Daesh hideout in Aleppo city, the capital of the province of the same name in the north of the country.

Daesh has escalated its terrorist activities since the early this year, with at least 90 operations since the beginning of 2025, including armed attacks, targeted killings, and bombings.

These actions have killed more than 30 people, reflecting a significant increase in the activity of this group, which is on the United Nations Security Council’s list of international terrorist organizations.

Despite Daesh’s loss of territory in Syria and Iraq, these statistics reflect its ability to reposition itself and carry out operations through its sleeper cells, and also point to significant security challenges.
