South African Vice President launches Clean Cities and Towns campaign

Pretoria, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The South African Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, launched today the national Clean Cities and Towns campaign to promote sustainability, equality and solidarity among all citizens.

This initiative, according to an official statement to that effect, envisages that it will initiate a nationwide movement that will encourage citizens in major urban centers to join together to carry out community clean-up activities in townships and villages. This joint effort, the text adds, will not only promote cleaner environments, but will also “foster community spirit and pride”.

The campaign, according to the document, builds on commitments made by the Deputy President in early 2025 to address environmental and socioeconomic challenges in South Africa’s urban environments.

The campaign will form part of a broader government service delivery initiative in the context of the District Development Model, led by the Mashatile.

The Deputy President, together with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero and senior government officials will participate in symbolic clean-up activities at the launch activity of the initiative, which includes tree planting.
