The president stated that he has “ordered an investigation into the escort itself, to find flaws because whenever a killer attacks a protected person, there is a security breach”.

The head of state revealed that the young man arrested as the perpetrator of the attack is willing to cooperate, and on this point, he emphasized that it is the state’s responsibility to protect his life because he is a child. “A minor is used and paid because he comes from a poor family, and in this case they trade the death of a Colombian for the life of his mother and family. This pattern is repeated time and again,” he lamented, and adde that this unfortunate incident is not a failure of the nation or of society as a whole.

He also expressed his rejection of the attempts by some presidential candidates to gain political advantage from the incident.

The 39-year-old senator was wounded with a firearm while speaking at an event held in a park in the town of Fontibon, west of the capital.

He was later transferred to Santa Fe Foundation health center, where the institution reported that he was in critical condition and that he would need to undergo a neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedure.
