Colombia hosts Latin American Conference of Social Sciences

Bogota, Jun 9 (Prensa Latina) The 10th Latin American and Caribbean Conference of Social Sciences (CLACSO), the largest academic meeting of its kind in the world, opened in this capital on Monday with the participation of nearly 4,000 speakers.

Under the theme “Horizons and Transformations for Equality. Democracies, Resistances, Communities, Rights, and Peace”, the event is expected to include more than 1,500 activities and the attendance of representatives from 937 institutions.

The Conference will also include an International Social Sciences and Humanities Book Fair and a Film Series.

CLACSO’s Executive Director Karina Batthyany noted that the meeting will “discuss alternatives that are at critical moments, at crossroads, with great dilemmas” in Latin America and the Caribbean

Batthyany commented that the decision to hold the event in the Colombian capital was due to the political process taking place in this nation, with the arrival, for the first time, of a progressive government and all the challenges that this implies.

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) is an international non-governmental institution with associative status in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), founded in 1967.

It brings together 927 research and postgraduate centers in 56 countries.
