According to his family, Alassane had been kidnapped after the Malian military government on May 13 dissolved all political parties and arrested several opposition figures for holding demonstrations to protest the postponement of elections scheduled for 2022.
A national conference held in April had previously recommended extending the presidency of the military’s Assimi Goita until 2030.
Alassane Abba, is leader of the Convergence Party for the Development of Mali, (Codem).
Mali, a country located in the semi-arid Sahel region, has been politically unstable in recent years and is also under attack from Islamist groups operating in the area.
