Colombian Senate continues debate on labor reform

Bogotá, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian Senate will resume debate on labor reform, a block of 17 articles of which has already been approved.

Wednesday’s session concluded with the creation of a subcommittee to analyze the more than 400 proposals submitted to the bill, as well as the possible inclusion of other points.

The bill was passed without incident with 67 votes in favor and 25 against, while the alternative bill presented by Senator Aída Avella, which reintroduced articles approved by the House of Representatives, was rejected yesterday, Wednesday, with 32 votes in favor and 47 against.

The project’s discussion takes place after President Gustavo Petro signed the decree to call for a popular consultation in order to modify labor legislation. According to the president, it will only be repealed before the polls if the points that the people are asked about, so they can express their constituent order, are answered positively by Congress.

The dispute between the Government and the Senate is related to the modifications implemented during its passage through the Fourth Commission, which differ from the content approved by the House of Representatives in October of last year.

According to the Unitary Workers’ Central Union and the General Confederation of Labor, the new bill that emerged from the Senate committee does not vindicate the rights of employees and does not meet the expectations of the labor unions.

Labor organizations consider the popular consultation to be the most effective means of providing better working conditions for the working class.
