Peronism still unable to achieve the necessary unity

Buenos Aires, June 12 (Prensa Latina) Cristina Fernández's conviction is generating growing popular unrest; more and more people are joining demonstrations in her support, but Peronist leaders are unable to achieve the unity necessary to promote a common front.

Since she foresaw the ratification of her sentence, the wise leader threw herself into the political arena, attracted attention, and insisted on a unifying discourse.

She found support from the Buenos Aires Province (PBA) , governor Axel Kicillof, and the head of the Frente Renovador, Sergio Massa, as well as other leaders who had been distant and from the trade unions.

But the conviction that took her out of the electoral race did not put an end to the internal struggle between La Campora, led by her son, Máximo Kirchner, and the troops loyal to Governor Kicillof, whom many see as the heir to the Peronist hierarchy.

Both sides returned to the crossfire underground, noted commentator Macarena Ramírez in an extensive article in the political analysis magazine Letra P.

However, according to other analysts, Cristina Fernández, still president of the Justicialist Party (PJ), even though she is banned from holding public office, can exert great influence to curb and even end this conflict, which is currently undermining the unity of Peronism, especially in the province of Buenos Aires.

The adverse ruling against the Justicialist leader generated a movement within Peronism that was unthinkable before that date: the PJ closed ranks behind its most prominent figure and found the unifying discourse it had been unable to find since Javier Milei’s electoral victory in November 2023.

The six-year prison sentence and permanent political disqualification against Cristina mobilized the party and, above all, is generating a popular effervescence that had not been seen in the last year and a half, despite sporadic protests.

And while Peronist leaders come to an agreement, popular effervescence grows by the hour. On Wednesday, Buenos Aires and many other cities such as Córdoba, Rosario, La Plata, Bariloche, and more were shaken by demonstrations in repudiation of the sentence against the historic leader, particularly in the capital.

A massive operation involving several police forces was unable to contain the massive demonstrations in front of Congress, in Plaza de Mayo, and in the Constitución neighborhood where the former president lives.
