UNESCO advocates, for an intercultural platform, for peace, from Cuba

Havana, June 16 (Prensa Latina) UNESCO today serves as a platform for intercultural dialogue to promote peace, according to academic Khaled Ahmed El-Enany, a candidate for Director-General of the organization for the 2025-2029 term, who is now visiting Cuba.

During a keynote lecture given at the José Martí National Library, the former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt, and currently a professor at Helwan University, defended the role of that agency in a context of worsening global conflicts.

In this regard, he asserted that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has become a “platform where people can debate and build consensus, rather than polarize issues.”

He also praised the organization for voicing those who do not have the opportunity to express themselves in its various fields of action, which is conducive to achieving peace.

El-Enany emphasized that during the upcoming work period, which he hopes to lead with the current backing of both the African Union and Arab League, the multilateral body will prioritize four key areas: supporting the African continent, advancing gender equality, empowering youth, and assisting developing states (particularly island nations).

Likewise, he said, the organization will defend equality in education, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals, based on access to technologies and investment in various educational areas.

UNESCO is a catalyst and driving force for international cooperation, contributing to the unity of nations with the help of the intellectual army it has at its disposal to support governments and address the world’s problems, he said.

“In a fragmented world facing unprecedented global crises, only peace can unite us and guarantee a harmonious life and a prosperous future for every human being,” he remarked.

The distinguished visitor will maintain a full agenda through Wednesday, featuring high-level meetings with Cuban government officials, particularly from the Ministries of Culture and Education, along with guided tours of Havana’s most significant historical and cultural heritage sites..
