According to the senior official at the end of his visit to Pyongyang, North Korean troops will help clear mines in the Kursk region, and the 5,000 military builders will participate in restoring its infrastructure.
Shoigu explained that an agreement had been reached on the continuation of constructive cooperation after the expulsion of the invaders from Russian territory, in particular, on assistance from the Korean side in the reconstruction of the Kursk region. President Putin also praised “the heroism of the North Koreans.”
Furthermore, the Secretary of the Security Council also reported that Russia and the DPRK plan to open memorials in honor of the North Korean fighters who fell during the liberation of Russian territory.
Likewise, Shoigu emphasized during his talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that the strategic partnership treaty between the two countries is already being implemented in practice and praised the cooperation between the armed forces of both countries and in matters of security.
The senior official also expressed his hope that direct flights between the two countries, suspended for more than 30 years, would soon resume and assured that bilateral contacts would continue in various areas of mutual interest.
North Korea and Russia signed a treaty on June 19. 2024, during Putin’s official visit to Pyongyang, a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty.
One of the clauses of the new treaty states that “if one of the two parties is subjected to a situation of war, due to an armed invasion by an individual country or several nations, the other party will without delay provide military and other assistance, mobilizing all means at its disposal in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and the laws of the DPRK and the Russian Federation.”
DPRK servicemen assisted Russian troops in expelling Ukrainian fighters who invaded the Kursk border region in August 2024.
