Uruguay’s PIT-CNT brings proposals to meeting with Orsi

Montevideo, Jun 23 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's PIT-CNT trade union presents on Monday proposals to President Yamandu Orsi, including a one percent tax on the country's wealthiest people to combat poverty. The meeting is part of the social dialogue proposed by the government to several sectors to reform the pension system.

PIT-CNT Deputy Secretary General Alejandra Pereira stated that child poverty rates “have increased in the last five years due to the pandemic, but also due to the lack of public policies and the total collapse of the State.”

Therefore, “establishing a one percent tax on the wealthiest people to eliminate it is necessary,” Pereira noted.

According to a statement, the labor movement will insist that the Executive branch develop a National Development Strategy.

Reducing working hours without losing pay is also on the agenda of the Uruguayan unions.
