Currently, difficulties are being faced in the process of locating, constructing, and operating the National Nuclear Waste Repository, Pichetto acknowledged this Wednesday during a hearing on this topic before the Joint Committees on Productive Activities and the Environment of the Chamber of Deputies.
According to a report published on the website of the newspaper L’Espresso, the parliamentary meeting discussed the disposal of nuclear waste and the identification of suitable areas for the development of renewable energy production plants, two issues of crucial importance to the country.
The minister recalled that the National Program for the Management of Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste was defined in a decree approved on October 30, 2019, which establishes the location, construction, and operation of the National Repository.
Fifty-one suitable areas have already been identified for its possible location.
However, to date, neither the territorial authorities nor the Ministry of Defense, with regard to military structures, have submitted any application to house this depot, and these materials are currently located in various plants throughout Italy.
