Cuba denounces US for denying visa to volleyball team

Havana, Jun 27 (Prensa Latina) The decision by the US Embassy in this capital to deny a visa to the Cuban delegation participating in a women's volleyball tournament in Puerto Rico hit headlines in the leading national media on Friday.

A Cuban Volleyball Federation (FCV) release reported that the Cuban team could be unable to attend the Final Four in NORCECA, scheduled for July 16-21, due to the denial of visas.

The text describes this measure as “unfair and discriminatory, and contrary to the sports’ precepts.”

The FCV explains that this behavior, contrary to the commitments inherent to the responsibility assumed by host countries of international sporting events, hinders Cuba’s presence in a competition included in its qualification for the Central American and Caribbean Games and counting toward the NORCECA and world rankings.

Several Cuban media outlets have similarly described this hostile behavior, aligned with the maximum pressure policy exerted by Washington on Havana since President Donald Trump took office in January this year.

Imperial arrogance, abuse of power, and disrespect for the Olympic Games’ rules are also among the most repeated accusations on social media over the issue.

The FCV release stated that the 16 members (12 athletes, two coaches, one referee, and one team manager) were notified at the United States diplomatic headquarters in Havana, where they submitted the request “under the deadlines established for such a process.”
